Having celebrated their one-year anniversary in September 2023, we sat down with Co-Founder Tom Bruce to understand how Lightspeed has helped power the business through its first year of operations.

“My impression of Lightspeed was that it was by hospo people for hospo people. That's sort of the vibe I got… The hospitality offering seemed like exactly what we needed.”

Having worked in hospitality for over 15 years, Tom was initially drawn to Lightspeed because of its roots in the hospitality industry.

“We got signed on, had a couple of chats… and it's been running pretty smoothly since then.”

Lightspeed provided Freshies with all the tools they needed to operate smoothly in their first year, and in the coming months, Tom is excited to explore the full potential of the platform’s capabilities.

“It's been a good year of building up our skills with it, and it's still only just scratching the surface. There's still so much more [we can do with the platform].”

Tom loves how easy it is to manage staff permission within Lightspeed, making team management a smooth and easy process.

“From a back office point of view, choosing which staff can do what… You just go, okay, well, I trust all these people; they can give out staff meals. And they can give away discounts and takeaways and that sort of stuff. So I'll just change that in the back office. I can give them more permissions, I can give them less permission, and it's smooth and easy.”

In the past, Tom has found that training people on a new POS platform can be tricky and time-consuming. However, thanks to Lightspeed’s user-friendly system, Tom can get new team members confidently using the POS within a day.

“I always found that when training and starting at new locations, the POS is always the trickiest thing to learn, but with Lightspeed, it's all there, and it's pretty self-explanatory.”

“In places where I've worked before, I had to spend a week or two really starting to get to know the POS and learning it. [With Lightspeed], you can learn it in a shift or two. It's pretty cool, which I think is a credit to the usability of it.”

Product insights enhance service

Tom loves the live product and inventory insights that Lightspeed provides - making it easy to see, at a glance, if menu items are running low.

“Product availability; that's one that I think is crazy revolutionary compared to some of the older systems that I've used.”

“To be able to go, oh, this is what we have on the menu today. This is what is available. I know exactly how much of it we have mid-service. The chefs can say, oh, actually, we’ve only got two left of that. And you go, okay, cool. Updated it, done.”

Valuable insights into business performance

“I can see the trends.”

For Tom, having access to a wealth of business insights has been invaluable, allowing him to spot trends and understand how the business is performing over time.

“Having a site summary where I can pick apart and look at all the data from what's been happening in the venue, and I can see the trends. I can map them against what we've been doing six months ago versus what we are projecting that we should be doing, that sort of stuff.”

Having access to in-depth business analytics has also empowered Tom to make profit-boosting decisions based on the insights from Lightspeed.

“I've done a one-year analysis of how we're sitting at the moment and a comparison from the first six months to the last six months. And some really interesting numbers come up.”

“Over winter, obviously, our overall revenue is lower than it was in summer last year, but you can see that our food sales are way above where they were during summer, which is interesting.”

“So I said, okay, well, what does that tell you? It means that food's on the up, and people are coming down here more for meals than they are just to have a drink… So how do we use that moving forward into summer?”

“How do we boost that? How do we increase the profitability of the food to make sure that as we're moving forward, we're getting the most out of it?”

“You can't fault the team for getting in and getting it fixed ASAP.”

Tom and the team love the support they get from Lightspeed and how quickly the team are able to help resolve any issues the business might have.

“The reactivity and how quickly problems are solved make you go, okay, cool, everything's fine.”

“It gives you a little bit more trust that whatever goes wrong, there's going to be a fix. There's going to be something that we can do to move past it. So that's actually one thing that has been really cool.”

“For an all-in-one system, it's crazy how powerful it is… With Lightspeed, it's all just there, and it's pretty user-friendly as well.”
